When Troy Mansfield takes guests walleye fishing they can expect a great day on the water. Troy has been guiding walleye more than half of his life and to say he's got it figured out is an understatement. Who else can burn through 25 DOZEN minnows by 3:30 in the afternoon? That's an incredible day right there!
But sometimes even Troy's surprised by his guests accomplishments... take 5 year old Connor Roers for example. While on a family fishing trip at Winoga Lodge, young Connor caught what many would consider a walleye of a lifetime! 30.25 inches - congratulations Connor!

Summer is officially here in Sioux Lookout. After a somewhat cool and wet spring, the warm weather has arrived and fishing has been hot! Our guests and guides have been catching lots of walleye, with 200 fish days topping the list! Trips to Big Vermillion have been putting great numbers of Lake Trout in the boat, too. And the muskie bite is on! It's a great sign when the first muskie of the season is a monster 50-incher! We're all done with the spring bear hunt now. Happy hunters and happy guides with many nice bears taken. Less than 2.5 months until the fall hunt begins!
When you're in the Outfitting business, a bear problem is a good thing. We pulled trail camera cards and had a lot of activity at our bait sites. Here's a quick preview of some of the bears we caught on camera. Big bears? Check. Color phase bears? You bet! Hunters are out this week and we know they're going to be a happy bunch. Just because walleye season is closed, doesn't mean Winoga guests and guides aren't out fishing. As they are in the winter, Lake Trout are fun to catch in the springtime too. Jigging, trolling and casting are all in play when lake trout use shallow water early in the season. Pike (on Lac Seul) and Small mouth bass are also open before walleye season. There's always something to catch at Winoga Lodge!
Even though we got an unexpected springtime dumping of snow (18-inches no less!) the bear baiting program is in full swing. Stay tuned for trail camera pics!
The first day we could get a boat to Winoga Island this year was April 23rd. From April 24- April 28 we got about 18-inches of snow!
Starting this week (May 1) we will be heading to the island to start getting ready for the 2017 season. Winoga guests and guides have been out in force drilling holes and catching fish. March and April are the best times to hit the ice with great weather and awesome fishing. There's no better way to tell a story that with pictures. Check out some of the catches from recent trips. |
